Physicians at Spine & Sports Medical Group include Physiatrists, Orthopedic Surgeons, and Podiatrists.

Our Physiatrists specialize in non-operative care of spinal disorders, particularly painful spinal disc problems. Physiatrists are physicians specializing in the treatment of nerve, muscle, and bone with complete training in the medical specialty Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) also known as Physiatry.

Our Othopedic Surgeons specialize in arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the shoulders, knees, hips and hands, as well as minimally invasive spine surgery practices.

Our Podiatrists specialize in surgery, trauma and sports injuries affecting the foot and ankle.

Our physicians are board-certified in their respective specialty.


Dr. Sherman TranSherman Tran, M.D.

Dr. Tran is a board-certified physiatrist. He graduated from University of South California in 1988 and Harvard Medical School in 1992.

After medical school, he trained in General Surgery for three years before changing his career interest to Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He completed his PM&R residency at Stanford Medical Center in 1998 and opened his private practice in San Jose shortly after.

Dr. Tran's main interest is in the management of painful spinal discogenic conditions. He performs all spinal diagnostic blocks and all interventional spine procedures. He is the founder and president of Spine & Sports Medical Group.

Dr. Felicia RaduFelicia Radu, M.D.

Dr. Radu is a board-certified physiatrist and a graduate of San Antonio Medical Center.

She has a special interest in the spine. She offers comprehensive rehabilitation of spinal pain in pre- and post-surgical patients.

Dr. Radu joined Spine & Sports Medical Group in 2002. She performs all interventional pain blocks and procedures as well as EMG/NCS. She adds depth and valuable pain management expertise to the group.

Dr. Radu is a member of numerous professional organizations.

Dr. Nicholas ColyvasNicholas Colyvas, M.D.

Dr Colyvas is board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has an additional board certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He trained in Orthopedics at UCSF, where he still teaches as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Sports Medicine Department in the Department of Orthopedics at UCSF.

Dr Colyvas has been in practice in the Bay Area for over 10 years and specialized in arthroscopy of the shoulders and knees. He is the team physician for a number of local sports teams. In addition to his academic ties Dr Colyvas is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Dr. James PetrosJames Petros, M.D.

Dr. Petros is board-certified in Physiatry and Internal Medicine. He attended Santa Clara University and Tulane Medical School. He subsequently completed residency training in Internal Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. In 2006, Dr. Petros changed his career interest and completed a second residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabiliation at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Petros joined Sports & Spine Medical Group in 2009. He is committed to providing exceptional, multi-faceted care in the diagnosis and treatment of problems associated with the spine. and the musculosketletal system.

Dr. Petros is an active member of numerous professional, research, and medical organizations. He enjoys Bay Area sports, weight-lifting, running, singing, traveling, and reading. He is fluent in Aramaic and Farsi.

Dr. Morteza FarrMorteza Farr, D.O.

Dr. Morteza Farr is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained in spine surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery practices.

Dr Farr has been performing complex spine surgery and orthopedics since 2001. Although Dr. Farr is well versed in all aspects of spine surgery, his main emphasis has been endoscopic decompression and fusion and motion preservation surgery. Endoscopic fusion is a technique that allows the surgeon to perform an operation that normally is done via a large midline incision through a small one inch incision. This allows for significantly less tissue damage and quicker recovery. Dr. Farr is one of few surgeons in the Bay Area with expertise in this minimally invasive operation.

Dr Farr is extensively involved in development of new technology for minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS). He currently holds several patents including new technology for MIS placement of interbody cages for lumbar fusion.

Dr. Barry MeskinBarry Meskin, D.P.M.

Barry Meskin is a Podiatrist specializing in surgery, trauma and sports injuries affecting the foot and ankle. His internship and residency were based at the San Francisco General and Oakland Highland Hospitals mostly comprised of surgery through the California College of Podiatric Medicine. This experience has provided him with an extensive and thorough background in foot and ankle care.

Dr. Meskin takes great pride in the quality of care and at all times provides a caring environment with special emphasis on comfortable, safe and complete care. He keeps up to date with all the latest techniques through regular attendance at post graduate courses.
